Hacker High School Summer Program

Hacker Highschool will be offering a week-long course on advance cyber security for teens at Mililani High School from 4 June 2018 through 8 June 2018. This intense class is targeted at those high school students who demonstrate a high degree of understanding in the fields of cyber security. This class is for your best and brightest who will be the leaders in CyberPatriot, GenCyber, and the real world.

Hacker Highschool would like all high schools to have their CyberPatriot coaches select students for this class. Seating is limited to 30 students total at this time.

We will be using the two textbooks, Security Analysis and Hacking Essentials from Amazon. Both textbooks were written by Hacker Highschool to teach teens “How to become a cyber security professional”. Students will be asked to purchase and read Security Analysis Essentials: Study Guide and Workbook - Volume 2 (Security Essentials Study Guides & Workbooks) before attending this course. The second text book will be provided to the students at no cost, and the class will include a pizza awards ceremony on the last day.

This course was created in 2012 by the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies (ISECOM.org) to educate teens around the world about the profession of Cyber Security. Hacker Highschool has written 22 cyber security lessons that are translated into 12 different languages. These lessons include Hacking Malware, Ethics and Laws, Attack Analysis, Digital Forensics, Database Security and so forth. The project utilizes free open source software (FOSS) to teach the teens instead of expensive commercial products.

Classes will start at 8:30 am and end at 12:30 pm Monday through Friday on the campus at Mililani High School. We are asking Cyber Patriot coaches to select those students they feel will get the most benefit from this week-long course. There currently 13 slots still open.

The course schedule is as follows:

4 June 2018 8:30 – 12:30 Sign in, Introductions, Networks and Servers (no text book required)

5 June 2018 8:30 – 12:30 Hacking Malware, Attack Analysis, and Digital Forensics (Book 2 required)

6 June 2018 8:30 – 12:30 Counter Forensics, Laws and Ethics, and Hacking Email (Book 2 required)

7 June 2018 8:30 – 12:30 Being a Hacker, and Web Security & Privacy (Book 3 required)

8 June 2018 8:30 – 12:30 Hacking Passwords, Labs, exam, awards ceremony (Book 3 required)

Coaches, once you have identified which students you would like to attend this class, forward their names and email address to Bob Monroe at bob.monroe@isecom.org. We will send out personal invitations to each student and ask them to purchase the Security Analysis textbook (Book 2 is available on Amazon) before class begins. If that student is unable to attend the class, please provide alternate names.

Hacker Highschool has a code of ethics that does not tolerate students using digital devices for any illegal purposes. If a student is discovered using course material for anything other than educational purposes, they will be removed from the course. The course is normally 6 months to a yearlong. Due to time constraints, this class will cover a vast array of topics that are not typically covered in college or professional level training programs.

Hacker Highschool was designed to teach teens how to become cyber security professionals. The weeklong course will touch on major topics as outlined in the above course schedule. The primary emphasis is to immerse each student into the world of cyber security as a profession, not a club or a side endeavor. Students will work on this program with a completely different understanding of security from what the industry has taught. Our foundation will be the Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual (OSSTMM), which is similar to other high-level security/mathematical frameworks used across the world.

We teach trust, the 12 operational security controls, separating an asset from a threat, and critical analysis of present and past information. Instead of Defense in Depth (which has been proven time and again not to work), we teach the Mobius Defense. During this short course, there will not be time to discover the trust propertied nor the inner workings of the Mobius Defense, however each student will be exposed to a completely secure way of thinking. Hacker Highschool has a mission to teach as many teens around the world about this security methodology.

Bob Monroe is the lead writer, instructor and researcher for the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies as well as a board member. Mr. Monroe will be taking the lead in providing this block of instruction to your students. Please choose your students carefully because they will be representing your institution in cyber events and in the professional world at some point soon. Mr. Blaise Hanagami is the teacher and POC for Mililani High School.

Students will be using live labs provided by the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies (ISECOM.org) to conduct research and exercises. This event is sponsored by Hacker Highschool, Mililani High School, Cyber Hui and (ISC)2 Hawaii Chapter.
